Drop-Off & Pick-Up Procedures
In order to accommodate the needs of MVMS families, the following procedures are put in place to
- Maximize student safety for all students
- Minimize the wait time for MVMS students and families
- Streamline the procedures for families of MVMS students who have siblings at MVHS and/or MVIS
- Alleviate congestion on SR 234 and 200N
Adults who are transporting MVMS students in the morning or afternoon are expected to follow the procedures outlined below.
- Always use Loop Drive only for morning drop off or afternoon pick up.
- Never use Shoppell Drive for morning drop off or afternoon pick.
- Never turn onto campus from SR 234 for morning drop off or afternoon pick up - only during the school day.
- In order to enter the West Lot, you must have an MVHS or MVIS student in your vehicle. Email jeff.brandes@mvcsc.k12.in.us for access into the West lot.
- Both A.M. and P.M. procedures are identical to last year’s (unless you also have a car rider attending MVHS and/or MVIS).
- Cars will enter the northern entrance of Loop Drive from 200 West. This will be the only access point for drop off and pick up at the Middle School.
- Upon entering Loop Drive, cars will follow the road heading east, and stay on the road as it turns south. Prior to arriving at the intersection of Loop Drive and Highway 234, cars will turn right, and head west towards the front of the Middle School. Cars will park and wait at a cone at the intersection of Loop Drive and Shoppell Boulevard until 4 minutes before the school opens. When the school is operating on a regular schedule, this will be at 8:21 a.m.
- At 8:21 a.m., a school official will remove the cone to allow cars to populate the curbside dropoff area in front of the Middle School. Cars will line up, single file, until the sidewalk ends. A school official and/or a white stripe will be at that location. The end of this first wave of car riders is signified by the end of the sidewalk at the intersection of Shoppell Boulevard and Loop Drive. Again, a school official will be there to ensure student safety and to enforce these procedures.
- Once all vehicles are parked and the school day has begun, a school official will signal cars to release their students. All students MUST exit on the curbside of their vehicles. This is crucial for their safety. Students will enter the building starting at 8:25 a.m. through door numbers 2, 1, and 24.
- Once all students are safely released and on the sidewalk, a school official will release the first wave of cars. Exiting cars will arrive at the intersection of 200 West and Loop Drive.
- As the first wave of cars is exiting, the next wave of student dropoff cars will follow the same procedures as before. They will line up in front of the Middle School in a single-file line, wait for all vehicles to park, release their students when the school official signals them to do so, and exit when motioned to do so. It is critical that cars pull all the way forward to maximize sidewalk space to load as many students as possible. This process will continue until all car-riding students have been released into the building.
- Mt. Vernon Middle School officially begins at 8:40 a.m. If students are not dropped off and in the building by 8:38 a.m., they will need to go to the front office, as they will be counted tardy. Please plan accordingly and arrive early to avoid tardiness.
- The procedures to pick up your student after school are similar to the morning procedures. Again, cars will enter the north entrance of Loop Drive from 200 West. This will be the only access point for pick up at the Middle School. Upon entering Loop Drive, cars will follow the road heading east, and stay on the road as it turns south. Prior to arriving at the intersection of Loop Drive and State Road 234, cars will turn right, and head west towards the front of the Middle School. Cars will park and wait at a cone at the intersection of Loop Drive and Shoppell Boulevard.
- At 3:35 p.m., a school official will remove the cone to allow cars to populate the curbside pickup area in front of the Middle School. Cars will line up, single file, until the double sidewalk ends. A school official and or a white stripe will be at that location. The end of this first wave of cars is signified by the end of the sidewalk at the intersection of Shoppell Boulevard and Loop Drive. Again, a school official will be there to ensure student safety and to enforce these procedures.
- Car-riding students will be released at 3:45 p.m. with a bell and exit to the pick-up area in front of the Middle School. If possible, please communicate to your students the approximate location of your vehicle as they exit.
- Students will line up on the sidewalk near the entrance of the Middle School and enter their vehicles when their car is available. Again, it is crucial that cars pull all the way forward to maximize sidewalk space to load as many students as possible. All students MUST enter their cars on the curbside. For safety reasons, they CANNOT enter or load their vehicle from the parking lot side.
- Once a car has its student safely secured in their vehicle, they may individually drive away from the curb and cautiously exit the pickup area. This process is similar to what you may see at an airport, as people are picked up by vehicles after returning from their flights. Keep in mind, our process will be much more regulated for the safety of our students.
- When exiting, cars will arrive at the intersection of 200 West and Loop Drive. There, a traffic officer will require cars to turn on 200 West.
- As cars exit the pickup line, cars should logically pull forward to reduce the gaps in the area. This will speed up the dismissal process.
- This process will continue until all students are picked up from the sidewalk.
- If your car is carrying students who go to multiple school buildings, you will need to go to the High School’s pickup/drop-off area. This includes any of the following combinations of students:
- High School and Middle School
- High School and Intermediate School
- Intermediate School and Middle School
- High School, Middle School, and Intermediate School
Multi-Student A.M. Drop-Off Procedures
- From the High School lot, car-riding students will be able to get dropped off at or picked up from any of the three buildings.
- Intermediate School students will head north, up the sidewalk next to the tennis courts.
- High School students will follow the same process stated earlier and head south.
- Middle School students will get on a shuttle bus located in the High School bus lot. The shuttle will travel to the Middle School and drop off the students there.
Multi-Student P.M. Pick-Up Procedures
- High School students will follow the same process stated earlier.
- Intermediate School students will head south from the Intermediate School and down the sidewalk next to the tennis courts.
MVMS West Lot - A.M.
- Available ONLY for MVHS students who are dropping off middle school students.
- Please contact Jeff Brandes, Assistant Principal, to gain access to this area. Mr. Brandes can be reached at 317-485-3160 or jeff.brandes@mvcsc.k12.in.us
MVMS West Lot - P.M.
- Available ONLY for families with MVHS/MVIS siblings in their car
- Middle School students will still be in school until 3:45 p.m. There will not be a shuttle bus in the afternoon. Therefore, multi-student vehicles that need to pick up a Middle School student will need to enter the West Lot of the Middle School. This lot is located west of the Middle School and is commonly used to access their swimming pool and field house.
- Once there, you will be able to pick up your Middle School student from Door 8.
- Please contact Jeff Brandes, Assistant Principal, to gain access to this area. Mr. Brandes can be reached at 317-485-3160 or jeff.brandes@mvcsc.k12.in.us
