Marauder Memo - December 1, 2024

Posted Date: 12/01/24 (9:00 AM)

MVMS
December 1, 2024
Parents,

As parents, it’s hard to see our children disappointed, but learning to accept "no" is a critical life skill. By calmly and consistently reinforcing boundaries, we help our children build resilience and emotional regulation. When we lovingly hold the line, we teach them that "no" can be a moment for growth, not defeat. 💡

Have a great week!
Dr. Lori Katz, MVMS Principal

"Because of You..."
We all know that Mt. Vernon teachers and staff show up every day to support each and every student. These “Because of You…” postcards provide an outlet for parents, community members, and other employees to recognize and appreciate any Mt. Vernon staff member! Now anyone can share a kind message to a bus driver, teacher, cafeteria worker, instructional assistant, custodian, or any staff member. You may fill out as many staff appreciation cards as you like--for free.

Bus
Bus Reminder
We want to remind everyone about our bus transportation policy to ensure the safety and well-being of all students.

For safety and logistical reasons, students are not permitted to ride home on a bus with other students, even if a note from a parent is provided. We understand that there are times when this may be inconvenient, but our goal is to maintain a safe and orderly environment on all school buses.

Thank you for your understanding and support in keeping our students safe.

Car Rider Drop-off/Pick-Up Reminder
Please remember to pull all the way forward during parent drop-off and pick-up, even on days with inclement weather. This helps ensure a smooth and efficient flow of traffic and keeps our students safe. Thank you for your cooperation!

Novel List Committee
The MVCSC curriculum novel list committee is seeking parents to participate on the committee. Parents who are interested should contact, Dr. Katz at lori.katz@mvcsc.k12.in.us, by December 6th. The original novel list committee met during the 2019-2020 school year. Our current approved novel list can be found on our district website on the curriculum page.  We have teachers requesting to add novel(s) to the list therefore the committee will be meeting (asynchronously) from January - March. The committee will meet to discuss the requests based on merits, content, and appropriateness. Finally, the committee will determine if any of the requests should be moved to the school board to request the board’s approval to be added to the list. Parents who are selected to participate will be notified by December 13th.

50th MVMS Talent Show
If you went to Mt. Vernon, you probably remember the talent show. The historic 50th MVMS Talent Show is set for March 13th and will be held in the high school auditorium.

The show will feature singers, dancers, musicians and many more unique acts. Auditions for students will begin in February. Tickets for the show will go on sale in March. Please save the date.

Camp Invention
Hello Families,

My name is Jessica Buell, and I am a 2nd grade teacher at Mt. Comfort Elementary. I am also the camp director for Camp Invention. I have an amazing opportunity for your child(ren) grades 7th-9th (grade is what they will be entering next school year) Camp Invention will be June 2nd-6th, from 9am-3:30pm.

The Leaders-in-Training (LIT) position is a summer opportunity for students entering grades seven through nine. (next school year)

LITs build leadership skills in a dynamic, invention-based setting while mentoring children in kindergarten through sixth grade. Through the program, LITs gain and practice leadership and teamwork skills, act as role models for younger participants, and learn to set and meet personal and team goals.

LITs work with a Camp Invention® Instructor to become a subject-matter expert in their module(s). LITs are also paired with a Leadership Intern mentor who helps the LIT develop leadership skills, which are used to empower Camp Invention participants as they become critical thinkers and creative problem solvers.

While at Camp Invention, LITs set goals, reflect on their experiences, adapt leadership techniques, give and receive positive, constructive feedback, and evaluate their personal performance.

LITs also help set a tone of excitement and team spirit and facilitate activities as needed. They engage Camp Invention participants in the overall experience, support them in problem solving, and assist in providing a safe environment. Not only is Camp Invention an opportunity for LITs to make a lifelong impression on younger children, it can also guide LITs in making future career decisions!

I can not express enough the impact that our LITs last summer made on the whole camp experience!

If you are interested in registering your child as a LIT go to this link. The cost to be an LIT is $170.

Have a wonderful holiday season!

Sincerely,

Jessica Buell

Nurse's Corner
Medication Drop-Off:
The nurse is usually in her office from 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday through Friday. Dropping off medication for a student can be tricky after 3:00 PM due to the car rider line forming and SR-234 being closed in front of the school. Lunchtime (11:00 AM to 1:00 PM) is a busy period in the clinic, so if you drop off medication during this time, please be aware that your visit may take longer.
Asthma/Allergy Action Plans:
I am still missing several students' asthma and allergy action plans. If these forms are not submitted, your child(ren) may be excluded from field trips. These forms must be signed by both you and your physician. They are available on our website here.
Water Bottles/Food:
It is helpful if students bring a water bottle to school each day to stay hydrated throughout the day. It is also important that they have a good breakfast in the morning before school.

Reporting an Absence
If your student will be absent from school please notify us by one of the following methods:

If a student is going to be absent from the school for the day, parents/guardians have the responsibility to notify the attendance secretary by 10:00 am with verification of the absence. Documentation of absences must be received within three days of the absence. An illness of three days or longer will require doctor verification for the entire absence to be excused. When a student is absent for a full or partial day due to a doctor, dental, or another appointment(s) a school excuse note from the provider will be required for the absence to be excused.
