Marauder Memo - May 18, 2025

May 18, 2025

Families,

As we head into the final full week of the school year, we know students (and adults!) may be feeling a mix of excitement and exhaustion. These final days are an important opportunity to finish strong—not just academically, but emotionally. How we end the year matters, and your support at home continues to make all the difference.

One powerful way to help kids stay regulated and responsible during this time is to remember: before we correct, it helps to connect. Children are far more likely to accept limits when they feel emotionally safe and supported. That sense of connection doesn’t erase the need for boundaries, but it softens them. It makes correction feel more like care than control.

🧠 Action Tip for Parents:
Take a few minutes each day to connect before you correct. Ask about their day, share a laugh, or just sit with them for a moment. When the relationship is strong, limits are received as guidance rather than punishment.
Let’s keep building that foundation of trust as we head into the home stretch!

Have a great week!
Dr. Lori Katz, MVMS Principal

Future 8th Grade Students - Preparing for College and Careers (PCC)

We wanted to share some important information about a valuable course offered to 8th grade students: Preparing for College and Careers (PCC).
This course - a requirement for a high school diploma - is designed to help students explore career interests, develop important life and planning skills, and begin preparing for their future academic and professional paths.

Due to increased graduation requirements and limited scheduling options during the regular school year, PCC is currently only offered at the high school during the summer. For this reason, we highly recommend that students take PCC during 8th grade. Doing so ensures they meet this important requirement early and have greater flexibility in their high school schedules. Many students have already requested this course, and space is limited. If you would like your student to be enrolled, please contact us as soon as possible.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out to Erin Brown (erin.brown@mvcsc.k12.in.us), Counselor for the class of 2030, if you have any questions about the PCC course or your student’s schedule. We are committed to helping every student access this important opportunity.

Summer School Information

This year, summer school will be offered by invitation only for select elementary grades. It will also be available at the high school level for students needing to earn course credit.

Please note: There will be no summer school offered at the Intermediate or Middle school levels.

To help all students maintain their academic progress over the summer, we encourage families to watch for weekly summer activities that will be shared throughout the break. These fun and engaging activities are designed to support learning at home.

Calling All Gardeners! 🌱

Our FACS (Family and Consumer Sciences) class is excited to start a raised garden bed project this spring! We're looking for donations of fruit and vegetable seeds or sprouts to help our students learn about planting, caring for, and harvesting their own food.
We'll be planting this spring, tending the garden over the summer, and harvesting in time for class activities this fall. Donations are welcome now through the end of the school year and can be dropped off at the front office.
Thank you for helping us grow something great!

Chromebook Damage - Please Read

We want to make you aware of an important issue impacting our school community. Recently, we have seen an increase in damage to student Chromebooks linked to viral social media challenges. These trends often encourage students to engage in risky behaviors that can result in costly damage to school-issued devices.

Please take a moment to speak with your child about the importance of using their Chromebook responsibly and remind them that intentionally damaging school property has serious consequences. Intentional damages are not covered by the optional device protection plan and will result in the cost of repairs. Together, we can help students make safe, thoughtful choices and protect valuable learning tools.

Thank you for your partnership and support.

MV Reads: News from the Library

Parents as we approach the end of the year the MVMS library would like to thank you and your students for taking good care of their library materials. We have a low overdue count compared to last year. Books have been searched for and returned. Many lost book fees have been paid. Please note we never charge an overdue fine. The only fee charged would be for a lost or destroyed book. Books can be returned at any point and to any school library. Keep looking under those beds and in the car!

Reporting an Absence

If your student will be absent from school please notify us by one of the following methods:

If a student is going to be absent from the school for the day, parents/guardians have the responsibility to notify the attendance secretary by 10:00 am with verification of the absence. Documentation of absences must be received within three days of the absence. An illness of three days or longer will require doctor verification for the entire absence to be excused. When a student is absent for a full or partial day due to a doctor, dental, or another appointment(s) a school excuse note from the provider will be required for the absence to be excused.

Nurse's Corner

Medication Drop-Off:
The nurse is usually in her office from 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday through Friday. Dropping off medication for a student can be tricky after 3:00 PM due to the car rider line forming and SR-234 being closed in front of the school. Lunchtime (11:00 AM to 1:00 PM) is a busy period in the clinic, so if you drop off medication during this time, please be aware that your visit may take longer.

Asthma/Allergy Action Plans:
I am still missing several students' asthma and allergy action plans. If these forms are not submitted, your child(ren) may be excluded from field trips. These forms must be signed by both you and your physician. They are available on our website here.

Water Bottles/Food:
It is helpful if students bring a water bottle to school each day to stay hydrated throughout the day. It is also important that they have a good breakfast in the morning before school.
