Create Your Own Bird Feeder

Create Your Own Bird Feeder
🛠️ DIY Project of the Week: Make a Bird Feeder

Bring a little nature to your backyard with our simple, eco-friendly DIY bird feeder activity! It’s a fun way to support local wildlife, explore basic environmental science, and observe birds up close.
  • Materials: Pine cone, peanut butter, bird seed, string.
  • Steps: Spread peanut butter on a pine cone, then roll it in bird seed. Tie a piece of string to the top and hang it outside. Watch as birds come to enjoy your homemade feeder!
Here are a few creative feeder ideas to try:
  • Pinecone feeder (peanut butter + birdseed)
  • Toilet paper roll feeder
  • Plastic bottle or milk carton feeder
  • Citrus peel or muffin tin feeders
All you need are a few household items, some birdseed, and a spot to hang your feeder outside. Then sit back, relax, and watch your feathered visitors arrive!

🐦 Combine the excitement of the 4-H Fair with some backyard science and you’ve got a summer full of discovery.

Focus on….Math and ELA

Connect the Dots to Math and ELA

  • Math Component: Measure the amount of bird seed used, then calculate the cost of materials if you were to make several bird feeders as a project. You can also explore the area of the pine cone or other shapes to see how much seed it can hold.

  • Writing Component: Write a story or a letter to the birds who might use your feeder. Include descriptions of the kinds of birds you hope to attract and why you think they might like the food. You could also write about your observations after watching the birds use the feeder.

Motivational Incentive

Submit a picture of your bird feeder here for a chance to win 4 tickets to the Hancock County fair!

MV Reads: News from the Library

All reading counts! This week try reading the newspaper or a magazine with your family. Next time you are out shopping choose a magazine on your students favorite topic and read and talk about it together. It could be cars, travel, food, sports or computers , the choices are endless. Save recipes, cut out pictures or articles you like and stick them to the fridge. Local newspapers are available for free both the Fortville or McCordsville town halls as well as the Hancock Wellness Center.
