Week #6

This summer, help your middle schooler use technology to continue learning. Educational apps, online courses, and interactive websites provide engaging ways to explore new subjects, reinforce skills, and stay mentally active, all while making learning enjoyable during the break.

Have a great week!

Create a Stop-Motion Animation

  • Materials: Smartphone or camera, small objects (like toys or clay figures), stop-motion app or video editor.

  • Steps: Set up your camera and arrange small figures in a scene. Move them slightly between each shot, then compile the photos to create an animated video. Get creative with your storyline, and share it with friends!

Focus on….Math and ELA

Connect the Dots to Math and Writing

  • Math Component: Calculate the number of frames needed to make your animation last for a specific amount of time. For example, if you want your animation to be 30 seconds long and you’re taking 12 frames per second, how many frames will you need in total?

  • Writing Component: Write a short story or script for your stop-motion animation. Develop the characters and their motivations, and describe the setting and plot. After completing the animation, write a reflection on the process, what worked well, and what you’d improve next time.

Motivational Incentive

Upload a video clip of your stop-motion animation here for a chance to win a $25 Apple gift card! The winning clip will also be featured when we return to school in August.

MV Reads: News from the Library

Graphic novels have caught the attention of almost every middle school student.  These are not your grandfather's comic books!  These books tell complex stories with beautiful illustrations.  They come in all genres from fantasy to historical or science fiction. They can come in a series giving your student many books to enjoy. Ask your student to explain the story to you and show you some of their favorite scenes in the book. Check out some of the following popular titles.

Connection to the Community

Although technology can take learning to new levels, reinforce using technology with safety in mind by using Common Sense Media to check movies, video games, and more for rating levels and additional information.
Additionally, setting healthy boundaries with technology helps middle school students balance screen time and personal well-being. Encourage regular breaks, designate tech-free zones, and set limits on usage to promote focus, better sleep, and meaningful in-person connections while using devices responsibly.
