Connect the Dots to Math and Writing

  • Math Connection:Exploring nature builds math skills—measuring trails, spotting patterns, estimating distances—real-world experiences that make math meaningful and fun for middle schoolers.

  • Writing and ELA Connection: Nature sparks creativity! Encourage journaling, poetry, or storytelling inspired by outdoor adventures. Real experiences enrich vocabulary, comprehension, and expression in meaningful, engaging ways for middle school readers and writers.

Motivational Incentive

Share a picture of you hiking or enjoying a park or the outdoors here for a chance to win an outdoor adventure for your PE/gym class  in August!

MV Reads: News from the Library

Reading aloud is not just for younger children.  Even your teens will enjoy it if you pick out a book and you all find a cozy spot on the couch (no phones or earbuds!).  Middle schoolers can read to their younger siblings as well. It sets a great example for the littles in their life.  Encourage them to make gestures and use silly voices to really sparkle up the story.  Some great read aloud choices are listed below.

"Perhaps the most important message that comes from our reading aloud to [kids] is one that says you are worth the time this will take. When I read to you, I give you that same undivided attention you once had snuggling in the lap of a caregiver who read to you. Lester Laminack, The Ultimate Read-Aloud Resource
