December 7, 2025

Hello MVMS Families,

As we head into these final two weeks before winter break, I want to extend my gratitude for your continued partnership. Our students are working hard, our staff is giving their all, and the energy in the building is joyful and focused. NWEA testing occurs Monday and Tuesday this week. Please make sure students are charging their Chromebooks nightly and are getting good rest to do their best.

Thank you for supporting your child’s learning, encouraging good routines, and staying engaged as we wrap up 2025 on a positive note. Let’s finish the semester strong!

Have a great week!

Who controls your time?

As you wait in the car rider line or are driving to or from taking your child to one of their activities, take some time to listen to this TED Talk on Screen Time: Who Controls Your Time

We know that preteens who own smartphones are more likely to have depression, obesity, and insufficient sleep than their peers, according to a new University of Pennsylvania-led study.

What they found: Kids who owned a smartphone at age 12 were found to have about
  • 31% higher odds of depression,
  • 40% higher odds of obesity and
  • 62% higher odds of insufficient sleep than their peers who didn't have one.

Why it matters: Roughly half of American kids now own a smartphone by the time they turn 11. Pediatric health groups have recommended appropriate screen time for youths, but there are no public health guidelines on the appropriate age for kids to first get a smartphone, the study says.

For tips on how to monitor and limit your child’s smart phone usage, check out MVCSC Tech Director’s recent presentation to our PTO: Parenting in the Digital Age: Social Media

Tutoring Opportunity

Peer tutoring will be offered after school on Wednesdays from 3:10pm - 4:00pm in Room B204. There will be mini-lessons at the start of tutoring to discuss topics such as organization, using a planner and many other tips for having a successful school day. High school NHS students will be paired with middle school students to work on homework, missing assignments or to review topics in math and ELA. Students will need to be picked up at 4:00pm in the front of the building.

If you are interested, please complete this form. Spots will be limited due to having enough high school tutors to support students. I will send a follow up email after I receive the form to let you know if your student has a spot. Thank you for your request.

Updated Contact info - Please Read

Dear Parents and Guardians,

To help us ensure the safety and well-being of all students, we kindly ask that you review and update your child's emergency contact information. Having accurate and current contact details allows us to reach a responsible adult quickly if needed.

In addition, we are implementing a new sign-in/sign-out process through our Raptor system. Keeping your emergency contacts up to date will help streamline this process and reduce delays when students are signed in or out during the school day.

Please take a few moments to log in to Skyward and verify or update your child's emergency contacts by November 14th.

Thank you for your prompt attention and for helping us maintain a safe and efficient system for our school.

Medication Drop-Off:
Medications can be dropped off from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday through Friday. Dropping off medication for a student can be tricky after 3:00 PM due to the car rider line forming and SR-234 being closed in front of the school. Lunchtime (11:45 AM to 1:00 PM) is a busy period in the clinic, so if you drop off medication during this time, please be aware that your visit may take longer.

Asthma/Allergy Action Plans:
I am still missing several students' asthma and allergy action plans. If these forms are not submitted, your child(ren) may be excluded from field trips. These forms must be signed by both you and your physician. They are available on our website here.

Water Bottles/Food:
It is helpful if students bring a water bottle to school each day to stay hydrated throughout the day. It is also important that they have a good breakfast in the morning before school.

Be Prepared: It’s a great idea to keep a small personal kit on hand during your menstrual cycle. Consider including items like pads , wipes, and even a change of clothes—just in case.

New Students: If you're new to the school, please make sure to turn in your vaccination form as soon as possible. This helps us keep everyone safe and up to date!
