Hello MVMS Families,
The final days of the school year are now upon us, bringing a bittersweet mix of excitement for summer and a moment of thoughtful reflection on the journey we've shared. It is truly remarkable to witness the tremendous growth our students achieve throughout their middle school years, and this year has been no exception. In every facet - academically, emotionally, socially, and physically - our students are concluding this year significantly further along their personal and educational paths than where they began. The success and progress they have made would not be possible without the incredible dedication of our parents and guardians. On behalf of all MVMS staff, we extend our sincerest gratitude for your unwavering support and partnership throughout the school year.
Have a great week!
Dr. Lori Katz, MVMS Principal

If your family knows that your student will not be returning to Mt. Vernon Community Schools for the 2026-2027 school year, please return your student-issued Chromebook, charger, and protective case to the MVCSC Technology Office next week.
Devices that are not returned will result in replacement charges being assessed to the student account, including the full replacement cost of the Chromebook, charger, and protective case.
Returning devices promptly helps us prepare technology for incoming students and avoid unnecessary fees for families. If you have questions about returning a device, please contact the Technology Department.

A limited number of yearbooks are still available for purchase in the school office for $20. Yearbooks will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last.

Starting next school year, all 8th grade students will be enrolled in PE 1 in place of Wellness 8. This change ensures students continue to receive the required health instruction while also participating in a semester physical education course. As part of this shift, students will earn high school credit during their 8th grade year. We are excited to offer this option as a way to support both student wellness and academic advancement.

At the May 2026 meeting, the MVCSC Board of Trustees approved consumable curricular fees for the 2026-2027 school year. These fees are based on each student’s course schedule and are not textbook rental fees.
Consumable fees cover materials students use during coursework, such as clay, paint, sheet music, science lab supplies, PLTW project materials, and other hands-on classroom resources, but do not include textbooks. These materials are used directly by students and cannot be reused from year to year.
The complete list of fees will be posted under the “Parents” tab on each school's website soon and will be communicated to families once available.

Summer Learning & Digital Wellness |
As summer begins, we encourage all students to keep reading! Even just 15–20 minutes of reading each day can help maintain and strengthen literacy skills while building imagination and curiosity. Trips to the library, reading together as a family, audiobooks, magazines, and independent reading all count!
Students can also continue using IXL throughout the summer to help keep math and English skills sharp. A little practice each week can make a big difference in helping students feel confident and prepared when school begins again in the fall.
Thank you for supporting learning beyond the classroom. We hope your family has a safe, restful, and fun summer!

As summer begins and screen time naturally increases, it’s a great opportunity for families to reinforce healthy and responsible technology habits. Here are a few reminders to help students stay safe, balanced, and respectful online during the summer months:
- Set clear expectations for screen time, gaming, social media, and device use.
- Keep devices in shared family spaces overnight.
- Encourage regular breaks from screens and prioritize outdoor play, reading, family time, and physical activity.
- Remind students that digital behavior matters — kindness, respect, and good judgment should extend online as well.
- Monitor apps, games, and social media platforms to ensure they are age-appropriate.
- Talk openly about internet safety, including protecting personal information and recognizing scams or inappropriate content.
- Help children think critically before posting, sharing, or messaging online. Digital footprints are lasting.
- Consider creating “tech-free” times during meals, family activities, or before bedtime to support healthy routines and sleep habits.
Technology can be a wonderful tool for learning, creativity, and connection when used responsibly. Thank you for partnering with us to help students build safe and healthy digital habits all summer long!

Reporting an Absence
If your student will be absent, please notify the school by 10:00 AM using one of the following methods:
Important Notes:
- Absence documentation must be submitted within 3 days of the absence.
- If the student is sick for 3 or more days, a doctor’s note is required for the absence to be excused.
- For any doctor, dental, or other appointments, a provider’s excuse note is needed for the time missed to be excused.
Picking Students up Early
If your student needs to be picked up early, please notify the school ahead of time to ensure a smooth process:
Please include the following in your message:
